I’m currently in Taipei, Taiwan, meeting up with some friends from Vancouver who are here for a wedding. Last night, our other good friend, who lives here part of the year and is from Taiwan, took us out to a night market near my hotel called Tong Hua Jie to show us the ropes (plus I told him I’d like to try blood sticky rice cake while I’m here). Here’s a round up of pictures of what we dined on!
Blood Sticky Rice Cake – Listed as one of the top 10 disgusting foods in the world, but tastes good to me! Yes, it’s coagulated pig blood.
Pork Filled Fried Dumplings
Cherry Tomatoes Stuffed with Plums
Variety of items ready for deep frying. We had the fried chicken and squid with basil. Amazing!
Pork with Rice. So fatty and delicious!
Fish Ball Dumplings in Soup. I’ve never had fish balls that were stuffed with pork and other goodies before. Loved these! Anyone know where I could find them in Vancouver?
Steamed Pork and Cabbage Dumplings
Spicy Tofu Shop
Spicy Tofu in the Making
Spicy Tofu. And yes, more blood. This time, from a duck.
Jelly Dessert Stuffed with Different Flavours. Everything from green bean, to red bean, strawberry, and taro.
Although we were stuffed after all this (and other items for which I have no picture evidence), it started to pour down rain at our dessert pit stop, and we ended up running out to find a cab right away. Luckily it’s super close by, and I still have a few more days left here to try more Taiwanese street food at night.
Tonight, I’m off to a traditional 900 person Taiwanese wedding, and I’m sure it’ll be yet another feast…

Minji, yes it had an interesting texture to it! Not my favourite, but I did enjoy trying it.
