Earlier this week, I headed over to Urban Thai Bistro in Yaletown with a friend of mine for lunch. I’ve been there quite a few times, and used to frequent it for their all you can eat weekend lunch, even up to eight years ago.
This time around, instead of getting one of their weekday lunch special menu items, we decided to order off of the regular menu and try some different things. I opted out of Thai iced tea this time around, although I’m craving it as I write, and wished that I didn’t forgo the beverage after all.
We started out with the Larb Gai salad, as it’s always my favourite dish, and my friend wanted to give it a try it as well. This was well-spiced with lemongrass and lime juice, fish sauce, and also contained the requisite onion, cilantro and roasted rice, over a bed of lettuce. We ate this with a side of steamed jasmine rice, instead of as a starter salad on its own (as I always do)!
Other than that, we had the Panaeng (red) Curry with Ostrich, served with fresh lychee nuts and shaved young coconut. The curry sauce was rich and creamy, and I loved how it tasted with the fruit and coconut within! I’ve also never had ostrich before, and was very surprised by how tender it turned out to be. It was a lot darker in colour than chicken, and looked more like slices of thin beef, but with a lighter flavour. I would definitely order this dish again!
Generally when I go to Urban Thai Bistro, I order their Thai coconut jelly dessert as well. It reminds me of a very popular dessert that I used to eat constantly when visiting Thailand, and could never find anything like it here. I didn’t get it this time, so I don’t have a picture of it, but I will update this post next time I have the chance!
Urban Thai is also a great place in Yaletown if you’re looking for a patio to eat on during the sunny summer weather, with Asian flair!
