Last week I was invited to the 11th Annual Healthy Chefs Competition in Vancouver, by Karen Hamilton of Tiny Bites, which is hosted by the Hyatt Regency Vancouver every year. Sponsored by the BC Chefs’ Association (BCCA) and the BC Produce Marketing Association, this event included not just the judging of food from a variety of local chefs and restaurants, but also the chance to try a plethora of healthy food options and take part in a silent auction and 50/50 draw where proceeds went to both the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon.
The night started off with some mingling and drinks with a variety of appetizers selected by the Hyatt, just outside the main ballroom of the hotel. After moving on inside, we noticed that there were envelopes on our marked spots at the tables, that would reveal what feast we would partake in for our upcoming dinner.
I ended up with the Vancouver Community College entree and dessert from the Hyatt, although at a table filled with foodies, such at folks from Foodists, Follow me Foodie, Ed Lau, and Granville Magazine, I managed to taste most of the dishes by the end of the evening. When the night started off, quite a few of us hadn’t ever met in person, but by the end of the event, we were reaching over and taking food from each others’ plates.
Below, I have provided a picture gallery of most of the items served that evening. Just click on one and you’ll find a page with a more detailed description.
The winners of the event this year were:
The Healthy Chef Competition’s first ever Healthy Plate Award was given to the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre for their Trio of Stuffed Vegetables
Vancouver Community College Chef Dave Ryan and his team received the Healthy Chef Competition Award for Best Entree for the crab cakes and tenderloin (their second year in a row)!
Healthy Chef Competition Award for Best Dessert was accepted by Chef Julian Bond on behalf of his students from the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts. The winning creation was a Blueberry & Lemon-Basil Mousse Cake.
Chef Donald Gyurkovits of The International Culinary School at the Arts Institute of Vancouver and his hard-working team took home the Best Table Showcase and the Peoples Choice Award.
Next year’s event will return on Wednesday, March 16, 2011.
